Glossitis

29 June 2016, by AGBO-GODEAU S. & SZPIRGLAS H.

Summary

Glossitis is a general term that means “inflammation of the tongue” with a disease implication. However, there are some non-pathological conditions that can be worrying enough to rise unnecessary treatments or lead the patient to see a doctor.

Tongue pathology highly varies, reflecting all general pathology involving oral disease as stomatitis [1]. Some tongue presentations are virtually disease-specific and a diagnosis can be made at the first glance. When tongue involvement is the unique clinical feature, the treatment will address the stomatological, dermatological, and indeed the systemic aspects of the disease. As there is no classification that allows all forms of glossitis to be covered, we will discuss first the non-pathological features and then some of the most common symptomatic or aetiological pictures (table I).
