Non-infectious dermatoses in pregnancy

The types of dermatosis specific to pregnancy, in which pruritus is a constant feature, are currently categorised into four main groups: pemphigoid gestationis, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and atopic outbreaks of pregnancy. The latter category brings together atopic dermatitis in pregnancy, prurigo of pregnancy and pruritic folliculitis of pregnancy. We could add to this list autoimmune progesterone dermatitis and impetigo herpetiformis, which are extremely rare intercurrent conditions. Due to the secondary lesions caused to the skin, pruritus gravidarum enters into the differential diagnosis of these pruriginous types of dermatosis. Some clinical pictures are suggestive of a possible combination of some of the kinds of dermatosis seen in pregnancy.
