1 - EPIDEMIOLOGY

Chancroid or soft chancre is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the Gram negative bacillus Haemophilus ducreyi. It is most often encountered in tropical countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the West Indies. However, unlike the increasingly prevalent problem of genital herpes, the incidence of chancroid is decreasing in endemic regions [1,2].

Chancroid, syphilis and genital herpes cause genital ulcers and are the group of STIs known to increase the risk of HIV transmission.
