Tars

12 May 2014, by AZIB S. & DELAPORTE E.

1 -  DEFINITION, CLASSIFICATION

Tars derive from the dry distillation of a combustible. Combustibles, heated to a high temperature in the absence of air produce various gases and a dark, water-insoluble liquid called tar.

The following tars can be distinguished depending on the combustibles used:

– wood tar (pine or beech tar, birch tar oil, or cedar wood oil or cade oil);

– fossiliferous tars (coal tar);

– sedimentary tars (of schistic or petroleum origin).
