Nevus sebaceus

The nevus sebaceus is a congenital lesion localised mainly to the scalp that is generally easily to diagnose clinically and histologically. This lesion may be a complication of a benign or, more rarely, a malignant tumour and it is sometimes still taught that prophylactic excision is required. The risk of developing carcinomas has been greatly overestimated, mainly due to a clear publication bias, since uncomplicated cases are no longer published. Nevus sebaceus may be incorporated into Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims syndrome or nevus sebaceus syndrome.
